On America’s Past

Pomfret, Vermont was chartered in 1761 and the first division of land was completed that year, followed by a second division in 1770, and a third in 1774. By the end of the American Revolution, fields were cleared and rugged homes dotted the hills and valleys. These were followed in the early 1800s by homes and farm buildings surrounded by stone walls and pastures where merino sheep grazed. Dairy cattle became more common in the later 1800s. The Pomfret, VT Historical Society preserves the stories and relics of these earlier times. Please contact us to learn more.
