Pomfret Dance Cards

Alex Henzel donated dance cards from the 1900’s to the Pomfret Historical Society.

The card shown here, front and back, features an “Autumn Ball” dance that was held at the Pomfret Town Hall on September 15, 1905. The cards belonged to P. C. Wheeler of North Pomfret. It was typical that the cards were given out at the beginning of the dance and initialed by each dance partner.

During the evening there were always a mixture of dances including quadrilles, waltzes, contras, two-steps, polkas, and Lanciers (square dances). Many of the same dances and music are still performed today throughout New England.
