The link below has photographic images of the original 1761 Pomfret Town Charter signed by Sir John Wentworth on behalf of King George the Third in England.  Wentworth was Governor of the Province of New Hampshire at the time.  Vermont was originally part of New Hampshire.  The document is co-signed by Wentworth’s Secretary, Theodore Atkinson.  Pomfret is one of the few Vermont towns that still has its original charter.

On the reverse side of the document, names of the Grantees of Pomfret are listed and a small rectangle showing the size of the land.

A detail of the seal on the front of the document was also photographed.

Macey Lawrence, formerly of Woodstock, made many detailed pictures of the original parchment document, on both sides, for the Pomfret Historical Society.  He then from these images, created detailed a single photograph of each side.  This photograph is on display at the Pomfret Town offices.
