Hosea Doton Diaries
Hosea Doton was born in 1809 on his family’s homestead on Cloudland Road in Pomfret, which is now known as Sleepy Hollow. Hosea attended Pomfret School No. 2, which still stands on Cloudland Road, and continued to study mathematics and science after leaving school. In 1830, Hosea began teaching in Pomfret schools where he took a personal interest in the success of his “scholars.” Hosea was also a surveyor and a keen observer of Pomfret’s weather as can be seen in his diaries. In 1868, he was named chief engineer of the Woodstock Railroad. The Pomfret VT Historical Society has more than twenty diaries written by Hosea Doton from 1840 to 1885.
These transcripts include minor revisions to spelling and punctuation while retaining the original character of the diary. Language, spelling, and punctuation common to the mid-1800s have been preserved. A glossary and brief notes on people mentioned in the diaries appear at the end of the transcripts.
